I started the sport of taekwondo when I was 13 and first represented Australia at the age of 16 at the World Junior Taekwondo Championships. By this age I was training 20-25 hours per week. I went on to make various junior and senior national teams for the next four years, exposing me to national team training camps, international training camps and international competition. I competed in the 2004 Australian Olympic team selections, where I made the shadow team. I left the sport soon after this, when I was only 21. I believe my longevity in the sport was cut short by my lack of knowledge, as well as a lack of assistance received regarding nutrition. Taekwondo and the demands of the sport were not well understood. The amount of research in the sport is better now, though still trailing far behind other sports.
When I left the sport I embarked on my studies in nutrition, with the aim of trying to understand what I had failed to when I was an athlete.
I completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Food Science and Nutrition) in 2007, from the University of Queensland and went on to complete my Masters degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at Griffith University in 2010. I completed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Diploma in Sports Nutrition in 2016.
I am an Accredited Sports Dietitian, Accredited Practising Dietitian, Accredited Nutritionist, and Level 1 Accredited Anthropometrist. I am a member of Sports Dietitians Australia (SDA) and the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA).
My company, Sportrition Pty Ltd, is located in Canberra, Australia. I work with athletes from a range of sports, all the way through from the recreational to elite level. I regularly present on sports nutrition to school and sporting groups.
This book is the result of over a decade of nutrition education and practice, my interpretations of the peer-reviewed scientific literature as it applies to taekwondo, and my previous practical experience in the sport.
